Yesterday I saw what seemed like a hundred small birds descend in unison onto the front brown sugar fig tree. They talked, ate, then flew away all at once. Bees and many other stinging things took up residence in both brown sugar trees a week ago. They won’t leave until all the figs are gone. Today, I found this Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis) feeding on a fallen, over-ripe fig, slowly opening and closing her wings. I know just how she feels.
